So theres another new social payments kid on the block with an interesting twist that we like. Kwedit is a virtual loan shark of sorts. Although these guys dont break your virtual legs (although that would be an excellent option for Mafia wars).
Basically they loan you the money to buy virtual goods – and when you pay it back or refer a friend you earn some kind of virtual credit score which is good for your game rep. If you dont end up paying them – no biggy – but you will earn a bad score and it will affect your in game status according to the game.
MichaelArrington from Techcrunch certainly seemed excited by the concept saying “Its unreliability is what makes it so attractive to social game publishers and other people selling virtual goods. It’s also a great way to let the unbanked masses out there pay for stuff without getting sucked in to scamville-type scams.”
Arrington is also excited as this is a step away from the kind of activity that leads to users being pulled into the now infamous “scamville” type deals which he campaigned about late last year.
Its a great post read the entire post here or read our highlights and screen shots form the techcrunch review below.
And if it turns out the kids with no credit cards aren’t actually good at paying you back – you could always break their virtual legs!
>>>>>>>>>>>
The product is called Kwedit Promise.
Here’s how Kwedit works: they let users take on fake debt instead of paying for virtual goods with real money (or via scammy or legitimate offers). A user promises to pay later. It’s not an enforceable promise, and there is really no consequence if a user doesn’t pay. But there are built in incentives to pay it off, and Kwedit expects some percentage of people to actually do so.
As users take and pay off, or default, on Kwedit promises, a virtual Kwedit score moves up and down just like a real-life credit score.
Users get more credit (err, Kwedit) when they actually pay the stuff they agreed to. And if they don’t pay, the kwedit score goes down and getting more Kwedit becomes difficult. There’s some risk that users will try to sign up under another name to start fresh – but since most of the virtual games are on social networks and tied to established identities, that won’t work very well.
Kwedit also makes it very easy to pay off promised amounts. Most users won’t have credit cards, so they can’t pay via normal online methods. But users can print out (or save on their phone) a bar code and take it to any 7-11 store in the U.S. for payment. Or they can mail in cash via a pre-printed postage paid envelope (called the Kwedit mailer). And there’s a third way as well – users can ask others to pay the Kwedit for them via “pass the duck.” It’s a social payment feature that sends a message to a friend or family member asking them to pay.
What do I think of this? I think it’s brilliant. Social gaming companies like Zynga have said that they can only monetize a few percentage points of users via direct payments. They try to increase that number via offers, which is a slippery slope towards Scamville. Kwedit falls in between direct payments and offers. And even if users default, the Zyngas of the world aren’t out any cash. They’re just giving away virtual stuff in exchange for the Kwedit, after all.
If Kwedit’s early days are successful, look for all the gaming companies to jump on board quickly. And I also think this is a great idea for other virtual goods services – like online music. I’d love to pay for music on iTunes or MySpace music via Kwedit. At some point, we may just be able to. At launch Kwedit is available on 100 social games, and also as an option on Social Gold.
Is Kwedit unreliable? Yep. Is it Brilliant? Absolutely.

Another great Mobile list: The best Mobile Web Browsers
Another day another great mobile list. This time a list of the top web browsers for your mobile. This time courtesy of the excellent About.com You can see the full article here or the highlights below. Keep the feedback and comments coming – you guys are loving the lists!
Happy new year to you all! Another post – another useful list I came across today. Was shopping around for an alternative to my current twitter app for my iPhone. This great list of twitter applications for your cell phone is courtesy of the excellent Digital inspiration with their “The Best Mobile Applications for Twitter”. What apps do you use for your mobile?
1. Twitter Apps for BlackBerry
1a. OpenBreak – Originally known as TwitterBerry, OpenBreak is one of the most popular Twitter apps for BlackBerry. You can take a picture with your BlackBerry camera and directly post it to Twitter via TwitPic or yfrog using TwitterBerry.
The app will automatically recognize #hashtags in the tweets and a notification icon will show you the number of new messages in your Twitter timeline just like your BlackBerry displays notifications for unread emails or missed calls.
1b. UberTwitter – Another popular Twitter client for BlackBerry, UberTwitter is location-aware so it can automatically update your location based on the cell tower information even if your BlackBerry phone doesn’t support GPS (like Google Latitude). The latest beta of UberTwitter also includes support for Twitter Lists.
1c. Seesmic – With Seesmic, you can track all your saved searches and Twitter lists inside your BlackBerry phone. Just like most other BlackBerry apps, Seesmic can run in the background and notify you of new direct messages and @replies via the famililar notification icons.
2. Twitter Apps for Nokia Phones
2a. Tweets60 – As the name suggests, Tweets60 is a native Twitter client for Nokia S60 smartphones that is available in both free and pro versions. This application is primarily for users who just want to quickly update their own status on Twitter as well as follow what their other friends are saying on Twitter.
The pro version supports additional features like the ability to post images to TwitPic and follow search terms on Twitter.
2b. Gravity – Gravity is a hugely popular and powerful Twitter client for Nokia S60 smartphones. With Gravity, you can manage multiple Twitter accounts, save links from tweets to your delicious account, post pictures to any of the Twitter-friendly photo sharing site like TwitPic of YFrog and it obviously supports all the other Twitter functions like retweets, direct messages, favorites, etc.
You can download a 10-day trial version of Gravity from the Ovi Store.
2c. Snaptu – Snaptu is an all-in-one application that lets you manage your Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and even your Google Picasa account from the mobile phone. Snaptu’s Twitter application provides all the basic Twitter functionality – status updates, direct messages, @replies – while their Facebook component lets you update statuses and you can also read and write messages using Facebook email.
Snaptu works with any Java-enabled mobile phone including Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola models.
3. Twitter Apps for Windows Mobile
3a. Tiny Twitter – This is a free Twitter application for Windows Mobile that provides all the basic Twitter functionality. One of the unique features in Tiny Twitter is that you can temporarily suspend a Twitter user so that his tweets won’t appear in your timeline though he would still remain in your follow list.
3b. PockeTwit – This is another popular Twitter client for Windows Mobile with support for multiple accounts. You can take a picture from your camera and post it directly to Twitter via PockeTwit. The application features a nice sliding interface so you can drag the tweets to the left to see all the actions that you can take on that tweet. PockeTwit is free and open-source.
3c. Twikini – The app integrates with Windows Media Player so you can tweet the name of the song that you are currently listening to. Twikini can shrink URLs using Bit.ly or TinyURL so you have more space for text and it also displays Twitpic images inline. If you have a GPS enabled mobile phone, you can also add your location to the tweet with Twikini. The app costs $4.95 though a 14-day trial is available for free.
4. Twitter Apps for Android Phones
4a. Twidroid – This is probably the most popular Twitter app for Android phones – the basic version is free but you’ll have to get the PRO version in case you want to manage multiple Twitter accounts from the same application.
Twidroid supports all features of Twitter including Twitter lists. You can shake your Android phone to fetch the latest tweets but this again requires the pro edition.
4b. Seesmic – With Seesmic for Android, you can capture photos or record videos and share them on directly Twitter via yFrog. The app will also let you share you current location on Twitter. You can configure Seemic to notify you with a custom ringtone (or a blinking light) when there’s a new @reply or direct message for you on Twitter.
5. Twitter Apps for iPhone and iPod Touch
5a. Tweetdeck – TweetDeck is a brilliant application that you may use to manage both Facebook and your multiple Twitter accounts from the iPhone or iPod Touch.
The app will automatically sync with TweetDeck Desktop so if you have created any custom search columns on the desktop, they’ll also become available inside the mobile app (and vice-versa). Just shake your iPhone to check if there are any new updates.
5b. Tweetie – This $3 app is one of the most popular Twitter client for iPhone with a very impressive UI. There’s an offline mode so you can do things like reading past tweets, following new people, replying to tweets, etc. even without a data connection. You also get a bookmarklet that lets you post links from Safari directly to Twitter via the Tweetie app.
5c. Twittelator – One of the unique features of Twittelator is that it lets you record and tweet both audio and video clips from your iPhone. You can even tweet the name of the song that’s currently playing on your iPhone. The basic version of Twittelator is available for free on the iTunes store.
5d. Echofon – This is light-weight Twitter client for the iPhone that is free and supports nearly all the basic function of Twitter. The $5 pro version of Echofon supports push notifications so you’ll get an alert when another Twitter user sends you a direct message or mentions you in his or her tweet.

More ways to use Twitter on mobile phones
If you can’t find a decent Twitter application for your mobile phone, you should check out Dabr. This is like an improved version of Twitter’s mobile site.
Dabr will display a more detailed profile of Twitter users so you can quickly decide whether or not to follow a particular user. It will auto-convert Twitpic and other picture URLs into thumbnails so you can view images directly in your Twitter timeline without having to click the click. And since Dabr is a mobile website, you can use it from just about any mobile phone, not just a smartphone.
Another option is email. Just associate your Twitter account with Posterous and then you’ll be able to post updates on Twitter by sending emails to twitter@posterous.com. Whatever you put in the email subject will be converted into your Twitter status.
This email to twitter option will be quite handy if your phone plan allows unlimited email but you need to pay for every extra byte that you download on the phone (lot of BlackBerry plans are like this).

More proof the Facebook juggernaut is set to continue; Facebook VP Chamath Palihapitiya has just announced that Facebook Mobile has topped over 100 million users!
This is an extraordinary feat and Chamath was quietly chuffed in a recent blog post where emphasised the breadth of their service with partnerships with just about every mobile network globally, most of the network operators and expanded mobile browser access in over 70 languages.
For more on the Facebook Mobile milestone you can read the full Facebook Blog entry here orwe have included the key text below:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
We want as many people as possible to be able to access Facebook all the time, regardless of where they live or what device they carry. Today, we hit another milestone toward that goal, with more than 100 million people actively using Facebook from their mobile devices every month. This usage happens on almost every carrier in the world and comes less than six months after we announced 65 million people on Facebook Mobile.
Through this growth, we have continued to try to improve the experience of these mobile products. We work with every major device manufacturer and many operators to ensure that we can provide the best possible mobile experience across the thousands of different devices, mobile operating systems and carriers you rely on.
With every new feature or product we bring to mobile, our goal is to offer the same value and user experience that people know on Facebook. Here are some of the recent mobile products we’ve launched with that goal in mind:
touch.facebook.com
Mobile websites: Our mobile sites m.facebook.com and touch.facebook.com have been redesigned, enabling people to access Facebook from any mobile browser in more than 70 languages. With the explosion of smart phones, we want to make sure people have a great Facebook experience that scales with their device especially as people have begun to upgrade their devices more frequently.
Text messages: More than 80 operators in 32 countries enable millions of people around the world to stay connected and communicate with their friends on Facebook using SMS text messages. Recently we also launched a URL-shortening service called FB.ME that makes it even easier for people to share content. With FB.ME, you can share and access more through services like SMS that limit the number of characters in messages.
Applications: Facebook is already one of the most requested services on mobile, and we work with every major device maker and mobile operating system to bring applications and integrations to all platforms. We’re always improving these applications and have recently released updates for our applications on Android, Blackberry, iPhone, Nokia and Samsung. We also support a broad range of new Facebook experiences on devices from HTC, INQ, LG Electronics, Palm, Sony Ericsson and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile.
No matter which mobile device you own, you can always stay connected through Facebook using our mobile applications, sites or SMS. Find the right Facebook Mobile product for you at www.facebook.com/mobile.
Chamath, Facebook’s vice president of user growth, mobile and international, is getting ready for Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
SMS is still the king! We at prizeKing love SMS are pleased to report that SMS will continue to be a core driver for mobile data revenues for some time to come, despite gloomy economic conditions. This according to the latest market research report “Mobile Messaging Futures” released by Portio research.
We havent forked out the 3000 odd clams yet that Portio is asking for a copy – but Leading mobile news gurus Fierce Wireless reported some of the key stats as:
Worldwide Messaging Revenues set to exceed USD 233 billion by 2014
In 2009 worldwide SMS traffic topped 5 trillion messages, and that figure is set to exceed 10 trillion in 2013
MMS revenues for 2009 amount to almost USD 27 billion
Mobile IM revenues to be worth USD 18 billion by 2014
The future is bright indeed!
You can read more of the Fierce Wireless story here or see some of the selected highlights below:
SMS Continues to Confound Expectations as Worldwide Messaging Revenues set to exceed USD 233 billion by 2014
Despite the recent economic carnage experienced the World over during the last two years mobile messaging revenues continue to rise and the sector as a whole looks to be in excellent health. The appetite for mobile messaging continues unabated and is likely to be sustained for the foreseeable future.
The new edition of the report, ‘Mobile Messaging Futures 2010–2014’, discusses the vast mobile messaging industry worldwide, currently generating revenues in excess of USD 150 billion, and set to continue growing to more than USD 233 billion by 2014. The performance of SMS over the last five years has been staggering and remains so mainly because it is cheap, easy to use, convenient, discreet and universally acceptable to some 4 billion consumers worldwide.
During 2009 SMS continued to grow in all markets and the report confidently predicts that it will continue to do so for several more years. In 2009 worldwide SMS traffic topped 5 trillion messages, and that figure is set to exceed 10 trillion in 2013.
Today MMS, often cited as a failure, is a massive revenue-generating segment of the market. Full year revenues for 2009 amount to almost USD 27 billion, an impressive figure, and lest people forget, not far off what SMS was generating a mere 5 years ago. MMS is growing fast in all major regions around the world as affordable camera-equipped handsets flood the market and increasingly become the norm.
Mobile email has come of age and the report predicts aggressive growth with revenues predicted to triple over the next 5 years. Enterprise email not surprisingly accounts for between 70-85 percent of current revenues as more and more devices meet strict corporate security requirements. Rapid adoption of smartphones with high end features and bundled data plans characterises the consumer segment.
Despite the popularity of SMS mobile Instant Messaging (mobile IM), especially popular with the youth segment that has grown up with the Internet equivalent, is growing fast. Portio predict huge growth for mobile IM with nearly a billion regular users by 2014. This massive growth in users will be accompanied by an equally impressive increase in revenues worth USD 18 billion by 2014.
Apple have done it again with their latest revolutionary product – the iPad. So we at prizeKing thought we’d get on the bandwagon along with every other blogger on the planet and take a closer look at the iPad. We live in exciting times indeed!
But seriously though – with…
No multi tasking
No flash support
No camera
No HDMI out
And as many of our team will attest as avid iPhone users – will most likely contain a measly battery which will go flat in 30 milliseconds
… you’ll forgiving us for not throwing ourselves at the gates of our nearest Apple super store to buy an iPad.
Dont get us wrong we do love Apple – the iPhone rocks – but somehow I doubt its going to set the world on fire like the iPhone did.
And if it does fail to live up to the hype – Apple could always try branching into stylish easy to use feminine hygiene products.

It appears that the Scamville saga continues to hurt the reputation of the major social game developers Zynga with legal news site Findlaw reporting Zynga and Facebook too have been filed with a class action.
Lead plaintiff, Rebecca Swift, claims that she was fleeced of over $200 responding to offers of an I.Q test and green tea in exchange for in game credits of leading Zynga game YoVille. Zynga has previously repented somewhat for these kinds of offers, but it remains unclear what liability they will exposed to on this.
USA today reporting on the issue made an interesting point on ethics underpinning the class action:
There is no governing body to specifically regulate the social-gaming industry, which puts the onus on developers to police themselves, says Steinberg of Digital Trends. “It comes down to a question of ethics,” he says.
prizeKing has spoken previously about Zynga and their CPA deals. We at prizeking believe that providing a better value prosition for virtual currency users in the form of loyalty incentives would go a long way to avoiding the reputational nightmare that a “class action” can bring.
See Findlaw’s full legal post below or you can read it here
This suit may well disappear quickly. Zynga is looking at a possible IPO sometime next year. A class action suit on the books could seriously effect the stock price, and that would be game over for company execs.
A selection Mobile and Payments Industry twitter lists for your enjoyment
We at prizeKing love social media. In all forms. Twitter is a particular favorite. We also love the mobile industry of which we are part. So combining the two is a great thing.
Here is a great list we have found in our travels. Some of the key mobile industry executives are on this twitter list.
By the way you can also follow our wonderful tweets here and here
